Covid19 lockdown: Stock Up On Both Fruits & Vegetable; Not Vitamin C

The essence of writing this article during this period of the covid19 pandemic is to remind you that consuming high doses of Vitamin C for a very long period can be injurious to our health, this can sometimes cause kidney stones in our system.

What is Kidney Stones?

Kidney stones crystalline mineral materials that are hard in nature found inside the human urinary tract or kidney. The symptoms vary but are usually fever, pains and hematuria. When you see someone peeing and there are traces of blood in the urine (hematuria), the person might be suffering kidney stone.

If you are reading this, please ensure you consume lots of water! You know there is no such thing as too much consumption of water. Like my Nigerian Doctor would say: Drink water o!

Ordinarily the average adult female needs 70mg of vitamin C a day while the average adult male needs or requires 90mg per day.

But, Please note that Nursing mothers or women who are pregnant might need higher doses. There is this saying that there is an exception to every rule, and humans tend to take advantage of it. If for any reason you require extra doses of Vitamin C; please remember the upper limit for the amount of Vitamin C a person can take is 2000mg/day.

This is because the human body doesn’t store vitamin C, in other words, the rest is wasted almost immediately after you drink it. I can assure you that the people advising you to buy 1000mg of vitamin c supplements know this, but they just want to make sales.

My advise is that you take your fruits if you cannot afford the 1000mg of Vitamin C daily. You will be just as fine. I personally prefer fruits in my home.

Oxalate

You see those high doses of Vitamin C you consume can lead to the accumulation of a Certain Compound known as oxalate. This Compound in high Concentration Can lead to kidney stones.

Every drug is a poison depending on the dose you know.

Well, If you do not know; Now you know.

Kindly remember nothing last forever, but as we prepare for lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic it’s adviced to stock up on both fruits and vegetables that has a longer shelf life.

These fruits includes; Oranges, Mangoes, Nuts, Carrots, Onions, Apples, Bananas etc. Also, make sure these fruits are fresh from your vendor

Stay healthy while on lockdown lock

Apples: Under the right conditions, they can last for a long time. When stored in the fridge, however, they’ll last a whole lot longer — refrigerated apples can last up to two months.

Potatoes: The ideal storage temperature for potatoes is 40°F, however Sweet potatoes don’t last very long in storage, so eat those within a week.

Fresh oranges: can stay will keep for 2 or 3 weeks out in the kitchen. Keep them in the fridge.

Onions: store it in a dry place and it will last for at least 6 months or more.

Carrots: Will keep for 3-4 weeks in the refrigerator. Keep in a plastic bag in the crisper. Avoid buying the baby carrots

Nuts: are a great source of protein, fat and fibre. And there are so many to choose from. Most nuts last for about a year.

I often tell my folks that to eat nutritious food you have got to stay alive, please do not try to go out when it is not absolutely neccessary. Lrt us practice social distancing because this is the only viable way to defeat covid19 as of now.

I know a vaccine would be made available soon, but until then please stay alive.

Stay home, stay safe
