I was going through an exciting health thread online when I came across the question “if snake bites you for yansh, where you go tie?” Sounds funny a question right? It should because it was asked in “Pidgin” But it’s a very important question. A question that could save many lives; now let me translate the question to proper English: “If I get bitten by a snake at my butt, what part of my body should I tie?”
Now let me explain, in Africa, there is this myth that when you suffer a snake bite you should immediately get a rope, a scarf or anything to tie the spot where you were bitten to stop the venom from moving through the blood stream to your heart. Well, I once believed this.
But truth is, tying a tourniquet above or around the spot of a snake bite is old practice and advice that could lead to serious medical complications.
Now let me explain this to you; tying the spot where the victim of a snake bite was bitten can concentrate the snake venom around that body part which can lead to that body having to be cut out because of gangrene Dead tissue caused by an infection or lack of blood flow) or might lead to death because as soon as you untie the spot you were bitten the venom can speedily move directly to the heart.
Suffered a Snake Bite?
This is what you should know and do. Peradventure you were bitten by a snake you should keep calm, don’t panic because the faster your heart beats, the faster the venom will be transported around the body and to your heart. If the venom spreads, this could lead to serious harm.
So you must stay CALM.
- After suffering a snake bite you must ensure the victim doesn’t MOVE or try to walk. Any form of Movement makes blood supply to the heart faster and this pose a serious risk.
So, do not move the body part that has been bitten by the snake.
If the victim suffers a snake bite to the leg, then get a stick and tie it to the other limb so that it is not movable; If the snake bites the arm. Tie the arm to the body.

Do not ever try to give the victims of snake bites any first aid treatment, get the patient to the hospital immediately! The more time you waste, the more complicated the situation becomes.
Let me tell you the biggest problem! Not all hospitals have anti-venoms in stock, so it’s advisable you call the hospital beforehand, and avoid moving the patient from one place to the other looking for hospital with anti-venoms. Remember the patient does not have much time.
Another important thing is to ensure you can give detailed description of the snake or better still take note of the snake that bit the person. This is important to help the doctor determine kind of treatment to be administered to the patient.
Please don’t try to suck the wound, cut or burn. You’re wasting valuable time and causing more harm. You might even be sucking poison and this could be risky for you.
For the answer to the question, If snake bite you for nyash, where you go tie?”
Folks! Nowhere, please don’t tie any part, Just ensure that the victim of the snake bite DOES NOT TRY TO WALK! The muscles in the butt can fasten the return of the venom to the heart and this could be very dangerous.
Let the victim stay CALM or lie still, he or she should not try to move at all before getting to the hospital.
